We spent just one night in Atlanta, and most of our time there with my old friend, the composer Misha Stefanuk and his wife, Evan. Misha and I go way back to the early days of MP3.com, and haven't seen each other since Misha moved away from Hoboken 5 years ago. This time around, we had a chance to play and record about an hour worth of music, skippets of which I hope to post in this space soon. We also discovered a vegetarian-friendly food chain Sweet Tomatoes, which features a huge salad bar for $9. The food isn't incredible, but good enough for the road.Trusting another friend's recommendation, we checked out the Easter service at Big Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Atlanta, featuring a wonderful 25-piece gospel choir, and genuinely impassioned preachers.
Overall, I feel somewhat bummed - there does not seem to be a deluge of things to see. Everywhere you go, huge shopping malls, super-Walmarts and the like, these huge, well-lit spaces with zombie-like energy. Once we get on the road, it's 20 miles between exits, at the exits there are gas stations ... everything looks the same... The radio is completely vanilla: Christian Rock, preachers, and Top 40. Yuck. Last night we found a fun college station which was playing Americana, but it was a weak signal which eventually withered.
We're in Athens this morning, and hope to find something exciting.. though we have to jet out of here soon, on the road to Charleston. What's in Charleston? Something old, we're not quite sure what.
More soon.

You could have checked out the Center for Puppetry Arts, the High Museum, the Atlanta Aquarium. If you want to see the good side of Atlanta, you have to stay for a while. There's Shakespeare's Tavern, Agetha's Mystery Theatre, Dad's Garage Theatre. Its all downtown and not always easy to find.
The thing about The South, is not so much the attractions but the people. You find the good people with good stories and the southern food. You have BBQ at family reunions and watch the kids play. If you want the wild and crazy, you have to be "in the know" because the good people keep their naughty side private.

i'm so sorry to have dropped the ball on our visit to ATL. The last few weeks have been really busy and we never got a chance to plan anything except the very beginning. Our time in Atlanta was fairly short, and mostly we just played.
I sincerely hope we can come back again soon and visit with you + family at least for an afternoon.

But seriously, if you want to see the interesting parts of Atlanta and surrounding areas let us know. My husband was born and raised here and he knows a LOT of interesting and historical bits. We'll be more than happy to take you on a "tour".
